What's Growin' On: 5/2/06

Waltham 29, Green Sprouting Calabrese, & Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli

Realization Of The Day:
I have to start worrying about the broccoli again. The damn things came back to life. Entirely my fault. Instead of feeding the pathetic looking, half-dead seedlings to the chickens as planned, I watered them. What was I thinking? Now it's May (which is practically the beginning of summer here), and there is absolutely no chance I will be able to get broccoli to mature this late--even if I could untangle the rootbound mess each container has become and find some spare garden space. Hmmmm. Maybe I should just grab the scissors, snip myself the healthiest little salad on earth, and swallow the worry right along with it. Yes, that's it. I will eat the evidence.

Realization #2:
I still haven't transplanted the parsley, leeks, and cutting celery! (This flat of seedlings has been hiding on my potting bench.)

Minding The Moonsigns:
--Planted Masai and Straight'N'Narrow bush beans yesterday--which was the wrong day according to the moon. Today, tommorow, and Thursday (as I believe I noted at least twice in earlier posts) are the fertile, first quarter days for planting. Oops. Bright side #1: If the beans don't come up, I have something to blame. And #2: fortunately I didn't get around to planting everything else I wanted to yesterday. I think I mentioned that once you learn about this minding the moonsigns business, you will most likely wish you never had.

Miscellaneous:
--We had 4-1/2 inches of rain in two days. That does wonders in the garden. The garlic I planted in various spots around the garden last week as part of my Late Spring Green Garlic Plan is already poking up.

Note: I'm probably going to be taking a little break from blogging. Click here to learn why.

  1. i live close to st. louis so we have a similar climate. last year, i had a few broccoli plants that didn't make it to maturity before winter so i threw a cold frame over them...would you believe they lived and produced???

so, just to add to your fretting, you COULD possibly be harvesting these plants NEXT WINTER if you so desired!!! just throw a few straw bales on either side and cover with plastic.

  2. I bet you find those beans come up just fine and are just as tastey! Then again, maybe this is why I have so many problems getting some of my beans to come up each year? I've never heard of this moonsign planting craziness before, and I'm going to just pretend like you never mentioned it. That's the last thing I need to add to my mental disarray! ;-)

Cheer up... Take your time off. Come back when you realize you need this creative outlet again. You know we'll all be here (checking every day, of course, since your site is like on of those big bowls of "I can't leave it alone" soup you're always talking about making!)

March 2013 update: My apologies for the inconvenience - I know word verification is a pain - but I've had to turn it on to help stop the ridiculous number of anonymous spam comments I've been getting every day. Thanks for your understanding.

Welcome to InMyKitchenGarden.com! Thanks so much for taking the time to write. While I'm not always able to reply to every comment, I receive and enjoy reading them all.

I try my best to answer all questions, but sometimes it takes me a few days to get to them. And sometimes, I'm sorry to say, they fall through the cracks, and for that I sincerely apologize.

I look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy your visits to my kitchen garden!
