What's Growin' On: 6/1/06

Realization Of The Day:
I definitely missed my chance. This is not going to be the year I tame the raspberry jungle on the south side of the greenhouse.

But there are baby berries on the canes, and I can hardly wait for them to ripen (even if I'm not sure how on earth I'm going to reach most of them). To me, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that compares to the first crop of freshly picked raspberries. Click here for my favorite way to celebrate the harvest--especially if it's just a tiny one.

  1. Our house came with a 40ft stretch of raspberries along a fence. They were ridiculously untamed so we cut them all out last year with the intention of starting over with two or three new ones. Of course with raspberries it isn't that easy as they are sprouting up all over.

  2. I'm lucky that my aunt has raspberries at her house so I don't have to mess with them here.

  3. Sooooooo jealous. When/if I get a sizable piece of land that is the first thing I plan to plant.

    By the way, after eating organic raspberries for a while and then settling for some conventionally grown ones the other day (giving in to convenience) I have to say I was shocked to realize that I could taste the pesticides. I've heard people say this before, but had not experienced it for myself until recently.

  4. I've got a small in-ground patch, and a big pot of raspberries, both started from some of my dad's plants about 3 years ago. I don't even bother cutting them back, and I still get some nice results each year. These are REALLY small areas of canes, but it's good enough for me to snack on for a brief period of the summer. Another "once we have a real yard" fantasy...a nice big stretch of raspberries! Yum!

  5. Raspberries are my absolute favorite. In August when the farmers market has some I will definitely try your recipe for really raspberry tartlets. For now I have to be satisfied with drinking raspberry tea and drooling over your pictures.

  6. I have a small patch right outside of my gardening shed. This year a rogue cane is actually pushing its way up through the floor of the shed. I suppose I should do something about that (o;
    My favorite treat is to through a handful onto cereal in the morning. What a way to start the day!

March 2013 update: My apologies for the inconvenience - I know word verification is a pain - but I've had to turn it on to help stop the ridiculous number of anonymous spam comments I've been getting every day. Thanks for your understanding.
