I stopped on the way home to show them to a friend who asked what you do with, or get from, sheep. I went through the list - fleeces, milk, sheepskins, lawn mowing, lambs, meat... but forgot about fertilizer until I got home. When I told her, she said sheshad heard it takes many years to break down enough to use it on your garden or it'll burn the plants. I knew it wasn't that long - at most a year, like chicken and cow - but said I'd find out for sure. I was very glad to find this piece. I don't have to wait at all. :) Well, except for spring to come, which I'm in no hurry for as I like winter very much and it's just getting started. the.lilac.dragonflyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13264129571164074980noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21318605.post-2743266273249182902016-11-23T12:34:55.700-06:002016-11-23T12:34:55.700-06:00We play a radio 24/7 and they stay away.We play a radio 24/7 and they stay away.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21318605.post-84350475706544656722016-09-14T12:03:05.135-05:002016-09-14T12:03:05.135-05:00This is my go-to recipe! They destroyed my huge, beautiful hostas before I could even find out what they were. I used chunks of original Irish Spring soap. (found this tip online) You can grate it, but rain dissolves it faster, so I chunked mine up (not too big tho). Then sprinkled pieces in the flower beds. Worked like a charm. Only had to do it once. I did it again the next year for good measure. I've never seen another blister beetle (I had the black ones) in my yard.Jackienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21318605.post-49576698895689769012016-07-07T07:48:52.382-05:002016-07-07T07:48:52.382-05:00Everyone warned us not to put in a garden without ...Everyone warned us not to put in a garden without a fence since there are lots of deer in our area. On the recommendation of one neighbor we put in a raised garden with a fence. The fence is about 4 feet but the post are over 5 feet. My husband strung twine all around the perimeter around the posts three times and we looped blank CD's through the twine all ariund the perimeter. Now the height is 5 feet with glimmering CD's which startle the deer. Aluminum pie tins should also work. The deer stay away and my 16 x 16 foot garden is thriving !Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10199356057928345412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21318605.post-60339830089232350262016-05-30T07:33:20.029-05:002016-05-30T07:33:20.029-05:00I love spiderworts too, and we have a profusion of...I love spiderworts too, and we have a profusion of them in our front yard. Problem is, our landlady calls them "weeds" and has her "gardener" rip every, lovely wild thing out of the yard every spring. I swear he comes through with a blow torch. Why some people fail to see beauty in wildflowers, as well as others, is beyond me. I read that spiderworts were introduced into Europe as ornamental plants in the 17th century, so they DO have a history of not being seen as "weeds".Hanshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04394379852357655547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21318605.post-89751796368874615982016-05-26T15:43:02.141-05:002016-05-26T15:43:02.141-05:00"Spiderworts are among the world's most s..."Spiderworts are among the world's most sensitive-and certainly most attractive- devices for detecting nuclear radiation. The stamen hairs on a plant that has been exposed to low-level radiation change from blue to pink in proportion to the dose received. By counting under a microscope the number of cells in a hair that have so changed a scientist can index the severity of the radiation." quoted from North American Wildlife by Readers Digest 1982 I have had these beautiful and hopefully not useful, medicinal edible plants in my garden for the last 35 years. Rosemary doesn't like moist soil! It doesn't have to be kept really warm, by a stove would be a bit to dry and hot, indoor temps are fine even on the cooler side. I have three I have had indoors for years, I have them in a large clay pot in front of a south east facing glass door in va. They are huge and healthy and I do nothing special, other than avoiding over watering and cutting back more on water in winter. Even sitting by this door in winter they are quite warm enough! I hope that helps, and good luck fellow rosemary lovers!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07032385418149926519noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21318605.post-22395378266526270362016-03-17T12:27:36.394-05:002016-03-17T12:27:36.394-05:00I braid the leaves as I do the Dafodils until they...I braid the leaves as I do the Dafodils until they completely die. Take 1 1/2 cup of broth to boil, add finely chopped Chard, stem and all and simmer for 5 minutes, then add the rest of the soup, that is all the other ingredients. And that is it. I add extra pepper and a few red pepper flakes as the Chard is cooking. Chop it fine so it cooks almost instantly and the faster you cook it the fewer nutrients you destroy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21318605.post-53809872119982676292014-06-19T12:30:24.515-05:002014-06-19T12:30:24.515-05:00When freezing the tomatoes whole, do I need to des...When freezing the tomatoes whole, do I need to deseed them before using in sauces, etc.?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21318605.post-74085212620221701902014-06-04T17:55:53.161-05:002014-06-04T17:55:53.161-05:00Dear Farmgirl and followers...
